Description
A mere 30 million light years from Earth shines the spiral galaxy Messier 51, and its clear to see why it often goes by its nickname “The Whirlpool Galaxy”.
Like the Milky Way, ‘The Whirlpool” is a spiral galaxy with spectacular arms of stars and dust, glittering with hundreds of points of light
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has captured the Whirlpool’s face-on orientation to Earth, giving us a perspective that we can never get of our own spiral galactic home.
Chandra data is shown in purple, whilst in contrast the Hubble Space Telescope data depicts the galaxy as red, blue and green
Handturned from Tulip Wood, the base has been crafted in an Ogee shape, beautifully textured and tactile. The face has been hand painted with a combination of iridescent paint and intrinsic colours, embellished with Chameleon Powders to enhance the sparkling aura
Measurements: 23cm dia x 4cm high
